Bank on it
Friday, May 14th, 2010The Gray Lady ran a typically belated article yesterday on the closing of the Brooklyn Banks, New York City’s most famous skate spot. We won’t bore you explaining all the errors contained in this article—for starters, the cobbled brick surface is described as “perfectly smooth”—but we do want to gripe about the photo captions, which contain descriptions such as “performing a trick” and “performed a trick.” Imagine an article about basketball (though this piece should have gone in the Metro section, it’s in Sports) accompanied by a photograph of a power forward dunking, and the caption describing a “shooter making a play,” and you’ll get an idea of the deep ignorance at work here. When it comes to skateboarding, it’s professionally acceptable for journalists to be clueless. Come to think of it, that’s true about journalists and most subjects.
